Diana's View: Itching to Leave? (7/6/2001)

I don't know about you, but I got the travel bug early in life. I read books about Africa, was mesmerized by films set in France. Somehow, I knew that as soon as I could fend for myself, I'd be packing my bags and setting off to see the world.

But if you're too young to be independent from your family, what do you do to escape? Jennifer, from a small town in Ohio, grew up dreaming lustfully about such far away places as Detroit...and Wisconsin. Before she could afford to buy a plane ticket on her own, she used to just go to the airport...

Jennifer: "There I would watch all the international and exotic travelers from places like Chicago and Michigan. And dream about where people were going and where they're coming from and that they could travel anywhere they wanted."
Travel - even the promise of travel - opens your mind. And can make you desperate to get out of town...
Jennifer: "They'd be crying and tearful that they were leaving and I could not understand that. I thought, you're getting on a plane and you're leaving Cleveland and you're crying. I thought, trade places with me."
Today we're searching for new horizons and unexpected destinations. We're getting to the dog days of summer, and if you're itching to leave, wherever you are, why don't you come along with me? You might be surprised where you end up.
