Deal of the Week: RV Fever! Catch It! (5/3/2002)

Diana: You're listening to the Savvy Traveler. I'm Diana Nyad. I don't know about you, but spring makes me think about hitting the road -- y'know fastening a seatbelt and heading out for a little exploration. Rudy Maxa, our Travel Expert in Residence, has an idea about how to get your motor running, head out on the highway, and save some money in the process. Hi, Rudy.

Rudy: Hi, Diana. How are you?

Diana: I've got a bad case of wanderlust, Rudy.

Rudy: You're in luck, Diana. I've got something you can take for that. You probably know, I'm not naturally an RV kind of guy.

Diana: "RV" as in "recreational vehicle?"

Rudy: Right. But in light of the deal I'm about to describe, I could be persuaded. A company based in El Monte, Calif., that rents RVs is offering deep discounts on some one-way drives to reposition their vehicles for the summer.

Diana: Sounds like what rental car companies do at the end of winter, when they have to get cars from Florida back up to the Northeast and Midwest.

Rudy: Exactly. Which means for the month of May, and in some cases, into mid-June, El Monte RV has deals like this one: Take 7 nights to drive from Los Angeles to Dallas in a 22-foot motor home, the kind with extra sleeping space over the cab, for only about $22 a night, including 1,500 free miles.

Diana: That beats hotel prices. Now, what if I want one of those great big bus motor homes, so I feel like a touring rock star?

Rudy: Some of those are half off as well. They range in size up to 36 feet and come with TVs, and all the luxuries of home.

Diana: Do you need a special license to drive a motor home?

Rudy: Nope.

Diana: Where do I pick up one of these land barges?

Rudy: El Monte has locations scattered around the country, mostly up and down both coasts, but also down in Texas, as well as Denver and Salt Lake City. We'll post the details below. Drop by and see where the road takes you.

Diana: Talk to you next week?

Rudy: You bet.
