Carry-on Baggage

OK, I can understand the flight attendants' concern about over stuffing the overhead bins, and I might even understand the sizing restrictions, arbitrary as they are. I don't understand the continued refusal of the airlines to take full responsibility for the safety of our checked baggage.

I'm an avid photographer, and often take a lot of equipment with me on trips. If they're going to make me check $15,000 worth of equipment, they should be forced to ensure it gets there safely. As it stands now, if they lose the whole lot, they are only liable for an amount which is approximately equal to the cost of the film I bring along.

It's the least the airlines could do for us, if we have to make these concessions to baggage size.
