What Motivates Me to Hit the Road

Price, no doubt about it. I've found that if anyone can make a connection with a ticket broker (usually near a large metropolitan area) there are bargains to be found.

In 1976, I got a round trip from Kennedy in New York to Vienna - including 14 days at a first-class hotel, but excluding meals - for only $160. Round trip air fare alone at that time was at least $600-$800 in coach. Late November wasn't the greatest time of year to go to the Austrian Alps, but for that kind of price, one doesn't pass up the opportunity.

The plane that was supposed to take was delayed in coming to Kennedy, so the charter company was required to rent or book us all on a Pan Am 747. I probably had the best steak I ever had on an airline on that flight.

The same broker arranged for $325 trip to Rio de Janeiro (including a 14-day stay at the Guanabara Palace in downtown Rio), a $300 10-day trip to Romania, and a $200 13-day trip to Lima, Peru (both including accommodations). All were great travel bargains and others may be out there still.

Steve
