Everyone carries a cell phone that hooks up to the Internet -- a feature that's still new in the States. And when a subway train pulls into a station, passengers about to board are greeted with a seven-second, original musical score meant to soothe jangled, urban nerves. The music is different at each station.

The piece de resistance, though, was the toilet in the swanky Tokyo Park Hyatt. Its seat is electrically heated. Sit on it, and a control panel on the side provides the option of a stream of warm water followed by warm air. The darn thing does everything but apply baby powder and diaper you.
