Rundown for the week of September 19, 1998

The Carnival Sensation
During the summer we all heard about the Carnival Cruise ship Ecstasy catching fire near Miami. No fatalities but bad PR for the "Fun Ships" of the world's biggest cruise line. We got to thinking, "Would it help to restore Carnival's reputation if we let The Savvy Traveler's Marty Goldensohn tell all about his week on the Carnival Sensation, Ecstasy's sister ship? Or would that only make matters worse?"

Q & A I -- Preparing For The Holidays
Rudy talks to listeners about advanced preparation for the holidays.

Interview with Jim Cote
Rudy interviews Jim Cote, co-author of On The Road Again: Travel, Love, And Marriage. Life can be rough for the business traveler...the frenetic pace...the jet lag...not to mention the amount of time it takes away from one's family. Jim Cote stopped by recently to offer advice for the spouse on the go, as well as coping strategies for the family left behind.

Deal of the Week: Swiss World Offers Deals in the Air
A new airline, Swiss World, flies between Newark, New Jersey and Geneva, Switzerland for $79 each way. Offer good until September 24. The airline doesn't have a U.S.-based phone number yet, so check with a travel agent. You pay full fare, about $320 round trip. But once on board, you receive a coupon for half of that back in cash.

Q & A II -- General Questions
Rudy takes listeners' general questions about travel and mentions:

Day trips in the Frankfurt area
  • Weisbaden: 25 miles from Frankfurt Airport, elegant city, 26 hot springs, Kurhaus spa.
  • Mainz: 19 miles from Frankfurt Airport, 1000-year-old St. Martin's Cathedral, Gutenberg Museum, wine taverns, cruising along the Rhine.

Greyhound Postcard
Todd Melby talks about the time he traveled from Minnesota to North Dakota by bus. The trip with his children was one of his most memorable.

There we were, just two hours into a day-long Greyhound journey across the Great Plains, and one of my sons, Zach already had a story to tell."

Melby lives and writes in Minnesota.

Next Week on The Savvy Traveler
We take to the skies as author William Langeweische reminds us of the profound effect flying has on our outlook of the world.

"By raising us above the constraints of the tree line and the highway, it imposes a brutal honesty on our perceptions."

Then we try a different perspective when we go exploring the old-fashioned way...on foot.

"You spend much time here and your going to have your humble lessons"

We're hiking in the High Sierras and hearing your tips on the best place to find the essence of Fall...in next week's edition of The Savvy Traveler.

For tapes of the show...
If you want your very own copy of The Savvy Traveler, order an audio cassette. It's easy. Just call 303-823-8000. The price is $15. As Rudy says, it's a steal.
