Rundown for the week of September 12, 1998
Titanic Attraction in Nova Scotia
Last week the video for the movie Titanic went on sale. Did you hear
the reports of people beating each other up in order to get the last
copy on the shelf! Titanic fever is still out of control. And now the
Savvy Traveler's Kitty Felde has discovered that, ironically, a tidal
wave of tourists have flooded Nova Scotia, inspired by the biggest box
office grossing movie of all time.
Q & A I -- Most Embarrassing Moments
Rudy talks to listeners about their most embarrassing moments while
traveling.
Ira Glass
Rudy spends some time with Ira Glass, host of the popular public radio
show, "This American Life." We talk about what travel means to
him.
Deal of the Week: Air Travel Deals to Europe
Icelandair offers deals on
round-trip, stop-over flights if you book through its web site by next
Friday.
- Luxembourg, $250
- Copenhagen, $450
- Helsinki, $450
- Oslo, $450
At Icelandair's web site, ignore fares quoted and type in "Special
Offer Club." After listing your travel dates and cities, don't choose
the option "Charge My Credit Card," instead type in "Call Me." Within
24 hours Icelandair will phone you to finalize the details.
Fares are good through October.
Q & A II -- General Questions
Rudy takes listeners' general questions about travel and mentions:
Volunteer Vacation
Global Volunteers schedules 15-day trips to Ecuador several times
between January and February. 800-487-1074 International Workcamper
offers programs ranging from two weeks to a month. There is a $195
registration fee. 802-259-2759
Traveling to Quaxaca with a Baby
Traveling is safe, but Mexico may lack the conveniences and sanitary
standards in the United States. Bring provisions for the baby from
home. Check with your insurance company about coverage.
Hosting a Large Family Reunion
A good bet: the Port Ludlow Resort and Conference Center on
Washington's Olympic Peninsula. Rooms start at $95/night for singles
or doubles. The condo-like setup allows you to connect up to four
rooms. 206-292-1189
Maori Caravan
What do you get if you stop on the side of the road to help a large
Maori tribe with a flat tire? You get thanked in the traditional way
-- by touching noses. That's just one of the adventures as Savvy
Traveler's Judie Fein takes a road trip in Europe with a New Zealand
tribal family.
Next Week on The Savvy Traveler
Be sure to join me next week. We will travel on a luxury cruise ship
and learn that cruising isn't for everyone.
"And what about my wife Ruth? After seeing the activities list
(how many ping pong balls can you stuff into your bathing suit? The
hairy chest contest) she talked about swimming to freedom in
Cuba."
So if the love boat isn't quite your style, we'll seek out a little
adventure on the bus.
"There we were, just two hours into a day-long Greyhound journey
across the great plains, and one of my sons, Zach, already had a
story to tell."
Hitting the road AND the high seas, plus calls from those of your who
are already planning trips for the holidays. That's in next week's
edition of The Savvy Traveler.
For tapes of the show...
If you want your very own copy of The Savvy Traveler, order an audio
cassette. It's easy. Just call 303-823-8000. The price is $15. As Rudy
says, it's a steal.
