Cupholder Solution

Dear Rudy,

On a recent show, you talked about why there aren't cupholders on planes. I laughed out loud when I heard the airlines' explanation. They said cupholders projecting out of the arms of seats would be in the way of passengers entering and exiting their seats. What a hoot!

Of course you wouldn't design a cupholder that would be so obtrusive! Being an old pilot -- and a retired mechanical engineer to boot -- I see lots of situations in airplanes that could be made better by "thinking out of the box." Why not make the silly indentation that's molded into the tray table a HOLE all the way through the tray? Naturally, the hole would be the correct diameter to accommodate the beverage cups. How difficult can that be? Answer: not difficult at all.

- Jim
