Oddest Custom

Traveling in the Middle East, one gets accustomed to prayer rugs being put down in odd places. But, there are other, less safe, practices.

In 1976, I was flying EgyptAir from Aswan to Abu Simbel, sitting mid-plane (after having fought my way through the usual rush), when two stewardesses ran toward the rear of the 737. An Arab gentlemen on his first flight had set up his paraffin stove in the aisle to heat water for his tea.
