Round-Trip

During Christmas break in 1972, a college friend and I decided to hitchhike from Kansas City, MO to Corpus Christi,Texas. We really didn't have much of a plan beyond that. The first day we made it to Wichita, Kan, but couldn't seem to catch a ride past that point. After refusing several rides back to Kansas City, we realized it was getting dark and very cold. We finally accepted a ride from a college student from the University of Kansas who was going back to Lawrence, Kansas, which is only about an hour from KC. It was late when we got back to Lawrence, so our anonymous friend let us stay with him that night in his apartment. The next morning, he took us back to the interstate and we promptly got a ride back to Kansas City. Can you imagine letting two complete strangers into your home for the night in this day and age? Needless to say, we were very grateful.
