Pooch Motel?

While a friend and I (who had both studied French as our foreign language and knew no German) were driving in Germany, we were looking for a hotel late one night. We took out our German/English dictionary and found all the words for "hotel" and "inn", and then started watching for signs with those words. We spotted a sign and pulled into the parking lot. I went inside and tried to explain to the gentleman at the desk, who didn't speak English, that my friend and I needed a room for the night. The proprietor seemed confused, but then tried to explain to me why we couldn't get a room there. I walked out, both embarrassed and laughing, and got into the car and explained to my fellow traveler that this "inn" was a kennel.
