Barebones Bareback Charter

My former husband and I were married in 1985. My parents sent us on a bareboat charter out of Tortolla for 10 days, ending, we thought, on December 12.

On December 10, we discovered that we were supposed to have the boat back that day. We had no money (except the $ we needed to pay the exit tax and get us to the airport), and no contacts to help us out.

We found a German woman who owned a hotel on the unsheltered side of the island, that doesn't get a lot of charter traffic due to reefs, high surf and poor mooring opportunities. I wish I remembered the name of her establishment, but I don't. She let us stay there, charge our meals to our room, and even lent us post cards and stamps, and just asked that we pay her back when we got home. She was so wonderful and trusting. Because of her kindness, I try to reciprocate to whoever needs my help, whenever I can.
