Take the Ashtray -- Please!

I confess that some of my favorite glass dishes were once hotel ashtrays. But traveling in Spain I had a slightly different experience. My companion and I had checked out of a small hotel in Ubeda, a town between Toledo and Grenada, and had just walked out the door ready to be on our way, when the proprietor came running out after us, waving an ashtray, and pressing it on us. Maybe because it was the off season, he was hoping we'd spread the word, but that moment has lasted in my memory, among many from that trip. The ashtray sits on my dresser--I use it to hold earrings, and looking at it also brings back a lot of memories. Little souvenirs can be wonderful things.
