Another family reunion suggestion
Today you answered a question from Karen regarding
a site for a family reunion. I'm sure the place
you recommended in Washington is splendid, but I
have another recommendation.
We have an annual family reunion for 40-50 people
and we always go back to Asilomar on the Monterey
peninsula. Perhaps it isn't a site for all
families, but for us it is great, and the best buy
to be found.
Prices do inch up every year, but this past summer
the cost per person in a shared double was $148
for a 2-day reunion, including six generous meals.
Kids under 2 are free and those up to 17 are only
$84 for the 2 days. There is an even lower rate
for "historic" rather than "deluxe"
accommodations. Actually we all prefer the
historic, but they are more limited in number and
harder to get.
The grounds are set in the pines, but at the edge
of the ocean, with boardwalk nature trails, plenty
of beach space, a swimming pool, and lots of
charm. The Monterey Aquarium is nearby as are the
towns of Carmel and Monterey. The first few years
everyone had to explore the area, but now we opt
to stay at Asilomar, visit with each other, and
participate in the activities which we plan for our
group -- volleyball, sand castle building, kite
flying, talent show, etc.
The facility was built as a camp, designed by
Julia Morgan. Housing is in a variety of
buildings. Dining is in the central dining hall.
The large reception room in the administration
building looks like a lodge on the Canadian
Pacific route, with massive fireplace and
comfortable seating, a grand piano, pool tables
and a ping pong table.
Each group is assigned a meeting room for the
duration of the stay, and if you fill an entire
building (which you usually do with 40 people),
you also have exclusive use of the living room in
that building. Fireplaces abound are laid
ready to light, with ample wood in the storage
bins nearby.
Deer and raccoons are always on hand in this really
idyllic place.
You can tell, I recommend it highly. Its major
drawback is its popularity and booking is done a
year ahead.
Thanks for your show. It is always entertaining.
