Deal of the Week: Oo-la-la! Fantastique French Bargains (4/19/2002)

Diana: You're listening to The Savvy Traveler. I'm Diana Nyad. We've been talking about everyday travel this week, but if you're hankering for an escape from the everyday, you're in luck. Our Resident Travel Expert, Rudy Maxa, is here with his Deal of the Week. Hi, Rudy.

Rudy: Hi, Diana. This week, I've got three deals, all with a French theme -- though only one is actually in France.

Diana: Fantastique! Where are we going?

Rudy: First, to the Caribbean, to take advantage of some great resort deals. For example, you can go to the Caribbean's most posh island, St. Barts, stay at one of the fanciest resorts, Le Toiny, and if you book 6 nights by the end of this month, you get a seventh night free.

Diana: And St. Bart's is basically France on a beach.

Rudy: It is. Even the phone booths are replicas of the ones you'd find in Paris.

Diana: St. Barts is pretty pricey. You have any cheaper places that will remind me of France?

Rudy: I do. On the French half of the island of St. Martin, book 5 nights at Le Meridian L'Habitation Le Domaine, and get the sixth and seventh nights free through December 20th.

Diana: Not bad. Now, you said one of these deals is actually in France?

Rudy: This next one is. It's a leisurely cruise through the canals of Burgundy this July or August, but it's aimed at a select group of married folks.

Diana: A select group?

Rudy: Yes. Couples who got married in 1977 or 1952, which means you've been married 25 or 50 years. If you fit that description, French Country Waterways will reduce the price of your trip by 25 or 50 percent.

Diana: I know those are barge trips, but, frankly, the word "barge" doesn't sound all that appealing.

Rudy: Au contraire! These are 12- and 18-passenger luxury barges. Trust me: You'll want for nothing. The food and wine are top flight, and you'll have plenty of time to grab a bike off the deck and go explore the countryside.

Diana: Okay, now it sounds appealing. Merci beaucoup and abiento, Rudy. Talk to you next week.
