Deal of the Week: 8 Days in Bali for $999 (8/3/2001)
Diana: You're listening to the Savvy Traveler, I'm Diana Nyad. We've been talking a little about crime and risky situations on the show this week. And our resident travel expert, Rudy Maxa, is here with a Deal of Week that maybe for the gamblers among us. What do you have Rudy?
Rudy: Well, Diana, "upheaval" is the word of the moment in Indonesia right now - they're right in the middle of a painful change of governments right now, and over the last few years, sectarian violence has erupted on some islands with little or no forewarning.
Diana: Hmmm. Doesn't sound like an ideal place to vacation...
Rudy: Well, that's what a lot of people are thinking right now. But the resort island of Bali has been largely immune to the violence, and most all the upheaval. Now, a word of caution - the US State Department is warning against travel to Bali and all of Indonesia...even though the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs says going to Bali is fine. So keep all that in mind while I tell you about this deal you are not going to believe. You can do 8 days in Bali, this is including airfare from Los Angeles, a five-star hotel and a couple of days of guided tours - all for as little as $999.
Diana: That's less than $100 a day per person, including airfare!
Rudy: Exactly. It's an unbelievable deal. A tour company called SmarTours is offering this package with departure dates in late October, mid-November and five more dates in early 2002.
Diana: Is there a deadline for buying at these prices?
Rudy: As always during sales, the sooner the better. But, you should know, after October 31st, prices will go up $300 to $500 per person. And, as usual, the offer is based on two people traveling.
