When you're planning a trip, usually one of the first things you do is go online to research flights. Taking the train doesn't spring to mind. In the future, you might not have the option. Amtrak is in trouble. Last week, Amtrak officials said the rail system will be forced to cut all of its long-distance routes and eliminate 1,000 jobs by October if Congress doesn't approve a $1.2 billion budget. Are we in the last days of long-distance train travel? Travel Expert in Residence Rudy Maxa will help us sort it all out, with an assist from Jim Repass, president and CEO of the National Corridors Initiative.
