Rundown for the Week of August 25, 2000

The Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza, outside Cairo, Egypt, is probably the most famous tourist attraction on earth. More than 4,000 years old, this tomb of the Pharoah Cheops is the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. As part of our series on Cairo through the eyes of history's tourists, The Savvy Traveler's Tom Verde takes us along on a visit to the Great Pyramid.

Ice Cream Capital
It's August and the weather is sultry. At this time of year, nothing tastes quite as good as a dripping cone of ice cream. In Le Mars, Iowa, ice cream has been elevated to its well-deserved position of prominence. The Savvy Traveler's Susan Butler visits the ice cream museum in the self-described "Ice Cream Capital of the World."

Realities of Living on Fantasy Island
Have you ever dreamed of quitting your job, leaving the city and going to live on a tropical island? Well, that's just what Anne-Marie Ruff and her husband Peter did this winter. Is it really as idyllic as all of us imagine? Anne-Marie knows all about the reality of life on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand.

Season of the Bike
No exploration of motorcycle travel would be complete without consulting our resident biker enthusiast Dave Karlotski. Dave has written several pieces about his motorcycle adventures for The Savvy Traveler and so we asked Dave to tell what he enjoys about touring by motorcycle.

Interview: Gary McKechnie
Gary McKechnie is author of a new book called Great American Motorcycle Tours. Gary has written about his motorcycle trips for several years and his work has appeared in such newspapers as the Chicago Tribune and Washington Post. We recently asked Gary what the advantages were of traveling by motorcycle as compared to other types of transportation.

Next Week

We're going to take you to an island where it's impossible to sit around and do nothing. Ever been curious about what happens on a Club Med, swinging singles vacation?

"Anyway you can imbibe sangria, we imbibe it. We chug it, we have it poured down our throats, we lick it off each other's stomachs. By afternoon, I'm predicting half our numbers gone to heat stroke, the other half to cardiac arrest"

Hear the story of a conflicted player in the Club Med experience during next week's edition of The Savvy Traveler.
