The Perfect Husband

Dear Rudy,

While traveling alone through Indonesia, I suffered the usual pestering by Muslim males. My being 55 and no glamour-puss did not stop them. Solution: a husband! I invented a story about a nonexistent husband wherever I was.

He was sometimes a Qantas pilot and I was meeting him at the airport in 20 minutes. Or he was working in the city where I was staying and meeting me in five minutes. Or he was a diplomat and I was visiting village schools to assist him. (Then I dropped a few names of local high-ups for effect). It was a pity that my "husbands" were only imaginary, as I became quite fond of them over several weeks of traveling.
