Car rental upgrades

Rudy,

In your April 15 show you mentioned that you can sometimes get lucky with free car rental upgrades when the car you reserved isn't available. Recently I had an experience that indicates you can combine "savvyness" with luck and sometimes come out on top.

I was in Hawaii and the agent at the car rental desk told me they had a "special" on upgrades from a compact to a convertible, for only $10 extra. I was tempted but declined. Only then did he tell me that there were no compacts available so I was getting a free upgrade anyway to a nicer car. What I learned from this is that if the agency tries to woo you into an upgrade, they might be hiding the fact that you're about to get a free upgrade anyway.
