Question: 1/2 a seat on a plane

Dear Rudy,

Your segment on seat mates reminded me of this question. A friend of mine arrived at her seat on a trans-Atlantic flight to find that her seat mate had already taken her seat. That is, the seat mate had raised the arm rest between the seats and had filled her own seat and more than half of my friend's seat. There were no empty seats on the flight, and the woman clearly could not fit into a single seat.

My friend spent the flight in one half of her seat, squeezed up against this stranger. How should a Savvy Traveler handle such a situation?

Thanks,

Chip
