The ancient Greeks and Romans saw the sea as a source of enjoyment...and danger - a big bathtub that with sea monsters waiting at the bottom. But when the Roman Empire collapsed, so did any idea of the beach as place of pleasure. Lena Lencek and Gideon Bosker have written a book called The Beach: A History of Paradise on Earth. I asked them when the beach started becoming a social center once again.
